Jorge De León

EN

Jorge De León is a visual artist whose work is particularly focused in performance, painting and drawing. He grew up in some of the toughest areas of Guatemala City. He started off his art practice as a tattoo artist for Las Maras, a gang which he was a part of in his teen years. He later went on to graduate from the National School for the Arts in Guatemala, and has since then exhibited in numerous shows in Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

Along with others such as Aníbal Lopez, Regina de Galindo and Alejandro Paz, de León is part of an artists generation called “Octubre Azul” (Cazali 2000) who grew up under the bombs, bullets, fear and human rights abuses of Guatemala’s brutal civil war and the gang violence of the 1990s. Now in their 30s, the artists are gaining recognition for their gritty depictions of the modern realities of the Central American nation. Currently, his work is part of private collections and the Blanton Museum in Texas, and he works as an independent visual artist, specifically doing performance art, paintings and drawings.
