Youth Media Makers – Spotlight on Civic Engagement
Youth Media Makers is a project of The Video Lab, a free workshop designed specifically for New York City high school students and offered by the School of Media Studies at The New School. Nitin Sawhney currently serves as faculty adviser to Alexandra Kelly, Sarah Winshall, Javale Jean-Pierre and other Media Studies students who work with high school students all semester to complete media projects based on their individual interests in social and environmental issues.
This year the Youth Media Makers project culminated in a public screening of student work held here at The New School in June. Simin Farkhondeh, Education Coordinator at Democracy Now! attended the event as a special guest speaker. The video screening was followed by a Q&A session allowing Melissa Friedling, Tahir Hemphill, Ana Barson, and other media makers in attendance to ask the presenting students about their process.
