2013 NSPE Civic Engagement Grant Fund Awards
Among the recipients of 2013 NSPE Civic Engagement Grants this year are School of Media Studies Faculty Nitin Sawnhey and Kathleen Sweeney.
Nitin Sawhney and Peter Lucas (NSPE, International Affairs) were awarded a grant for Engage Media Lab: A hub for participatory learning and creative practice in NYC.
The Engage Media Lab is being established to foster civic engagement through media that empowers the voices of youth, citizens and marginalized communities. It seeks to support creative media narratives that inspire critical inquiry into the socio-political issues of the city and cultivates critical media practitioners. The lab is designed to train students to become media educators, youth to gain new media skills, and communities to engage in media through hands-on programs and collaborative projects. It aspires to become a hub at The New School and in New York City for design, research and civic action through participatory media innovations.
Kathleen Sweeney was awarded a grant for Postcards Post-Sandy.
Postcards Post-Sandy is a digital memory website created by undergraduate and graduate students from The New School as part of the course, Postcards Post-Sandy: Public Engagement Social Memory Workshop taught by NSPE faculty, Kathleen Sweeney. The site features photographs, stories, videos and interviews documenting the effects of Superstorm Sandy. Funding will: 1) help to establish three student fellowships overseen by the instructor to expand the scope of the archive, and 2) enable a presentation in October 2013 of the project at The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education conference in Nashville on “Resiliency & Adaptation.”
