Khushnuda Shukurova’s documentary Love Life Regardless selected by the Povery Cure International Film Festival.
Love Life Regardless unfolds the life of a rural Tajik woman in the character of a widow, Nadira Davlatova. Nadira is a nurse with 35 years of experience and a skilled farmer growing wheat, which is the main source of income for her large family.
Due to the collapse of the economic system following the demise of the Soviet Union and the ensued Civil War Tajikistan’s economy came to decay. Agricultural sector, which formerly employed the largest portion of the population, was hit the most due to the lack of investment, ruined infrastructure, and thinning labor force. Formerly community owned lands were cut into small plots and distributed among the rural population.
Nadira Davlatova was in her late thirties when her husband died from a heart attack and in order to support her children she managed to get a 2-acre plot to grow wheat and corn for consumption and sale. Every summer she takes vacation from the hospital to work on the land with her children and collects harvest at the end of the summer. This film is following her daily routine while she is working hard to stack food for winter. Nadira is also a dedicated mother to her children and a selfless nurse for her village community. It gives a glimpse into the customs and culture of Tajikistan represented by women and leaves the viewer intrigued and wanting to learn more about this small mountainous country in the heart of Central Asia.
