25 salaried PhD positions in the Faculty of Arts at Umeå University
The Faculty of Arts at Umeå University is looking to explore new topics in the arts and humanities by investing in strong research areas for the future. We are therefore looking to employ 25 PhD students as part of this strategy of strengthening research in the arts and humanities in Umeå.
The positions are fully-funded (salaried) for four years and accompanied by a fixed annual expenses package that can be used, for example, to contribute towards conference participation, data collection, international summer and winter schools or other activities. Successful PhD candidates will be integrated into either the Faculty of Arts Doctoral College or the Postgraduate School within the field of the Educational Sciences. Both offer a variety of courses aimed at refining professional, transferable and inter-personal skills, as well as comprehensive research training. Supervision of thesis work and other training within the discipline takes place in the respective department.
Studies commence in Umeå on September 1, 2014.

Requirements: a Master’s or equivalent degree in a relevant field, or at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second cycle (Masters) level. At least 90 ECTS credits must be of relevance for the proposed doctoral research project. Employment will be for a period of four years (first a contract of 12 months with annual extensions of 12 months after positive annual evaluation). This time must be research activity orientated and lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. Additionally, and depending on availability a PhD student may also work with teaching and administration up to a maximum of 20 % of his/her normal working hours. The period of employment may thus be extended up to a maximum of five years.

- copies of academic transcripts certifying eligibility,
- CV including references: the names of two persons whom we may contact for further information,
- copy/ies of your BA and MA theses, as appropriate, and any other publications that you wish to be considered for the application,
- a research proposal of no more than 20 000 characters excluding blank spaces, in which you should address the following:a) research questions and purpose of the project
b) previous research in the area
d) methodology/theory to be used
e) why this research project is interesting and relevant for the study area and wider perspective
f) a time plan
