From theorists Munsterberg and Benjamin to Deleuze and Gunning, the concept of shock has a long historical and theoretical legacy in cinema and media studies. Moving images and sound can challenge zones of sensory, emotional, or intellectual comfort. Movie theater, gallery, television, or touch screen, what does it mean to produce and experience shock in media? Or, have we entered a post-shock era? With a news cycle that appears increasingly punctuated by one explosive event after another, the time is ripe to revisit moving image media through the lens of shock.
The Cinema Studies Student Conference at New York University invites submissions from a range of disciplines to our conference, “Shock Value: Experience, Affect, and the Moving Image,” February 20-21, 2015. Topics may include but are not limited to:
- Theories and philosophies of shock and cinematic affect
- Disruptive formal techniques (editing disjunctures, non-linearity etc.)
- “Shocking” fiction, nonfiction, or experimental content (violence, death, terrorism, sex, etc.)
- Genres that provoke, thrill, or titillate (horror, exploitation, pornography, etc.)
- Media technologies from past to present (Technicolor, sound, 3D, IMAX, touchscreens, etc.)
- Bodily or psychic shock
- Political or social change filmmaking
- Representations of collective trauma in the aftermath of genocide, war, repressive regimes, or natural disasters
- Provocative auteurs or media personalities (Buñuel, Chan-wook, Tarantino, Haneke, O’Reilly, von Trier, Weerasethakul, Żuławski, and others)
- Jolting news and news reporting (shock jocks, terrorist propaganda, sensationalist news, etc.)
- Policing and censorship of controversial content
Please submit an abstract (250-300 words) and CV to co-chairs Gianni Barchiesi, Lukas Brasiskis, Tanya Goldman, Valeria Guerrero, Rochelle Miller, and Joseph Yanick at email@example.com no later than December 22, 2014. Participants will be notified by early January.
