Hang Up is a revelatory tour of the forgotten landscape of New York’s public pay phones. Their vanishing presence and the people who care for them remind us of a lost age of street communication and media technology.
The filmmaker, Hugo Massa, graduated last May from the Documentary Media Studies certificate program where he developed the film over the course of an intensive year of theory and production. Mr. Massa is a Brooklyn-based French filmmaker who also co-directed Ritmos Negros del Perú, a feature length documentary on Afro-Peruvian music. Hang Up, his first documentary short, reflects his interest in urban and sensorial anthropology, and the desire to confer visibility on the invisible.
