Understanding Media Studies: “Curating Digital Media Art” with Christiane Paul
Media Studies presents a talk with Christiane Paul, Associate Dean, School of Media Studies.
Christiane Paul will use exhibitions she curated—ranging from large-scale shows organized for museums to net art projects and an outdoor sculpture park—to address the process and challenges of curating and presenting digital media art. As an inherently process-oriented and participatory art form, digital media art has a profound influence on the roles of curators, artists, audiences, and institutions. Using a variety of artworks as examples, the presentation will address challenges of and strategies for new media art curation, as well as its cultural impact. The curatorial work will also be discussed in the context of digital media theory and digital storytelling.
About Christiane Paul: Christiane Paul is Associate Professor and Associate Dean at the School of Media Studies, The New School, and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her recent books are A Companion to Digital Art (fBlackwell-Wiley, May2016); Digital Art (Thames and Hudson, 3rd revised edition, 2015); Context Providers – Conditions of Meaning in Media Arts (Intellect, 2011; Chinese edition, 2012), co-edited with Margot Lovejoy and Victoria Vesna; and New Media in the White Cube and Beyond (UC Press, 2008).
At the Whitney Museum she curated exhibitions including Cory Arcangel: Pro Tools (2011) and Profiling (2007), and is responsible for artport, the museum’s portal to Internet art. Other curatorial work includes Little Sister (is watching you, too) (Pratt Manhattan Gallery, NYC, 2015); What Lies Beneath (Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul, 2015); The Public Private(Kellen Gallery, The New School, NYC, 2013); Biennale Quadrilaterale 3 (Rijeka, Croatia, 2009-10); and Feedforward – The Angel of History (co-curated with Steve Dietz; LABoral, Gijon, Spain, 2009).
