Glamour and Girlgaze Join Forces To Launch #NewView Film Competition
GLAMOUR AND GIRLGAZE JOIN FORCES ON #NEWVIEW FILM COMPETITION TO SHOW HOW YOUNG FEMALE FILMMAKERS SEE THE WORLD
Five Winners Will Receive Prize Money and the Chance to Create Films for Major Brands
NEW YORK / LOS ANGELES—Just 11 percent of directors for the 500 top-grossing domestic films are women. That number is only slightly higher—32 percent—for short films. To help close that gender gap, Glamour has joined forces with Girlgaze to launch a film competition to provide young female filmmakers with the thing they most want: the chance to work.
Titled #NewView, the film competition highlights how women see the world. We want your point of view. To enter, directors must create an original short film (three to five minutes) that showcases their perspective—on an issue, on their own life, or on our culture. A panel of judges led by Glamoureditor-in-chief Cindi Leive and Girlgaze CEO and founder Amanda de Cadenet will select the five winners. The judges for #NewView include Netflix vice president of content acquisition Bela Bajaria; actor and founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media Geena Davis; filmmaker Gia Coppola; actor, director, and producer Rashida Jones; director and director of photography Ellen Kuras; director Victoria Mahoney; actress and activist Chloë Grace Moretz; filmmaker Crystal Moselle; president of HBO documentary films and family programming Sheila Nevins; journalist, filmmaker, and activist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy; Condé Nast Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff; writer, director, and producer Kimberly Peirce; writer and director Dee Rees; writer and executive producer Shonda Rhimes; actress and activist Tracee Ellis Ross; producer and documentary filmmaker Regina K. Scully; entertainer Lilly Singh; actress, producer and activist Jada Pinkett Smith; artist Jill Soloway; actress, activist, and artist Amandla Stenberg; director Sam Taylor-Johnson; and actress and recording artist Zendaya. Birchbox CEO and cofounder Katia Beauchamp will serve as an entrepreneurial advisor for the competition.
The winning films will be released on Glamour.com and Girlgaze.tv. Each winner will receive $3,000 in prize money and may be featured in a future issue of Glamour. Winners will also receive a production budget to direct a short video for Glamour or one of the following major brands: Birchbox, LuMee, THE OUTNET.COM, and South Coast Plaza.

The film competition is part of Glamour’s larger #PoweredByWomen initiative, which aims to meaningfully increase the brand’s collaboration with female creative talent in 2017 and beyond. The initiative launched in Glamour’s February 2017 issue, which was entirely created by women—from the first page to the last.
