The New School Collaboratory

BACKGROUND
The New School Collaboratory is a university wide initiative that aims to enhance the
University’s goals of connecting the social sciences and design fields and fostering
meaningful, efficacious, and sustainable engagements with community and institutional
partners. Formally launched in 2013 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the
Collaboratory has provided a context to explore and reflect on socially engaged learning
and public scholarship.

In 2017, the Collaboratory started developing the digital arm of the initiative (the
“Collaboratory Digital Platform”) in order to:
● Raise the profile of public scholarship as a form of knowledge creation and public
engagement;
● Foster dialogue nationally across higher education institutions that deepens
understanding of diverse approaches to public engagement/public
scholarship/engaged learning, including scholars, educators, students, community
members, and practitioners;
● Promote public engagement with diverse audiences around specific projects and
initiatives;
● Enhance capacity of faculty, students and community partners to access, produce,
and share tools to facilitate implementation, documentation, and dissemination of
their publicly engaged work; and
● Improve wayfinding across across all stakeholder groups

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Content and Community Web Manager will work on web and multimedia content
development, curation, community engagement and capacity building. Specific
responsibilities include maintenance and development of the Collaboratory platform, as
well as supporting the production and implementation of Collaboratory workshops and
events.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Content Development:
● Identify, acquire, and/or develop new content for the Collaboratory site
● Edit and upload submissions to the Collaboratory Digital Platform on a regular
basis
● Propose and develop ideas on how to best feature content on the site

● Provide support to and follow-up with project teams (faculty, students and outside
partners) to guarantee we meet deadlines and quality standards for content
acquisition
● Work to migrate the platform migration from Squarespace to WordPress
Capacity and Community Building (Design and Facilitation):
● Contribute to the ideation and implementation of the Collaboratory workshops,
events and other forms of engagement that will support this community of practice
● Help develop tools for the Collaboratory participants that may be useful as they
develop their projects
● Support event-planning
QUALIFICATIONS
● Highly motivated with the ability to take initiative and function as a self-starter
● Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently
● Experience working in digital media including: blogs, social media, digital archives,
and multimedia storytelling
● Experience working with SquareSpace and WordPress
● Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
● Demonstrated proficiency in project management, operations, and systems
● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● An interest in critical, socially engaged, and public pedagogy
● Design and Technical skills: Adobe Creative Cloud, CSS, HTML

Hours: Approximately 10 – 15 hours during the academic year. $18.46/hour.

This position reports to Michele Kahane, Associate Dean, Schools of Public Engagement.
