Women screenwriters: Apply for a Residency in Berlin!

Are you an up-and-coming female screenwriter in Europe? This monthlong residency could be for you.

One of the most challenging parts of screenwriting is simply finding the time and space to do it, particularly if you are still up-and-coming and have to hold down a day job in addition to writing. This is where writing residencies come in.

A new residency, the Scriptwriter Residency from the European Women’s Audiovisual Network, aims at female screenwriters with a European nationality who have written or directed at least one feature film (fiction or documentary) distributed in one European country. The woman who is selected for the opportunity gets travel to and accommodation in a private room in Berlin from January 22-February 22, 2018. By design, the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) falls during this period, as well.

The “residential” part of the residency is only the beginning. The chosen screenwriter will also be mentored by script consultant Suzanne Pradel through four working sessions and will receive accreditation for Berlinale, which includes the opportunity to network at the festival’s European Film Market.

According to the EWA site, eligibility requirements include:

  • You must be a female scriptwriter, screenwriter/director or screenwriter/producer with a European nationality and resident in Europe (47 Council of Europe countries) having written or directed at least one feature film (fiction or documentary) distributed (Theatrically/TV/wide festival trajectory) in one European country. No screenwriter teams are accepted.
  • Applicants must be EWA members. (Join here)
  • You must submit a first draft of a script in English for a full-length feature film. Fiction only.
  • The principal photography of the film should be done in Europe.

Applications are due September 15, 2017, and details on how to apply can be found here.
