ACADEMIC WRITING FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS – Free 0 Credit Course
Wednesday 12 – 1:50pm (CRN 3514) or Thursday 12 – 1:50pm (CRN 1248)
In this free, equivalency-credit course, students who are not native speakers of English improve their academic writing by composing and revising several short essays on topics related to their field of study. We discuss the vocabulary and organizational strategies used in English academic prose, and practice important skills such as citing sources, summarizing, paraphrasing, reviewing other scholars’ work, and presenting an academic controversy. Students receive extensive feedback on their writing, and have an opportunity to lay the groundwork for projects they will be completing for other courses. Class time is devoted to discussion of issues raised by students, including cultural differences in conventions for academic writing, and problematic points of English grammar. We also look at strong samples of student writing, and analyze very brief published texts by contemporary scholars as examples of the structural and stylistic conventions that students will be expected to observe in their writing throughout graduate school.
