ISSUE TO BE ADDRESSED
Certain types of media coverage can increase the likelihood of suicide in vulnerable individuals, the magnitude of the increase related to the amount, duration, and prominence of the coverage, according to research reviewed and conducted by the World Health Organization, SAMHSA, Annenberg Public Policy Center, Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, National Alliance on Mental Illness and others.
Studies have shown that suicide increases when stories provide details about methodology, use graphic descriptions, are presented in a sensational manner, are accompanied with dramatic headlines and images and glamorize/glorify the individual who died—which can exacerbate self-destructive impulses in any individual who is experiencing psychological problems, traumatic stress or who is struggling with sobriety.
