Filmmaking grants & fellowships

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS supports independent filmmakers around the world via grants and other funding initiatives. Supported projects include narrative films, documentary films, and new media projects at various stages of production (development, production, post-production, distribution) that align with themes of social justice, women’s voices, youth voices, identity, cultural exchange, or climate change. Award amounts are up to $5,000 USD. Note: There are three grant cycles throughout each year (Spring/Summer/Fall).

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS supports emerging storytellers from around the world via filmmaking competitions, contests, and other initiatives. Prizes and honors are awarded to a variety of narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, and new media projects each year. Projects may be submitted to one of three distinct categories: Emerging Filmmakers, University Students, or K-12 Students. Honors recognize outstanding works of fiction, non-fiction, animation, and new media as well as achievement in directing, acting, editing, screenwriting, and more.


The FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS fellowship program sends experienced filmmakers and educators around the world to teach filmmaking, media literacy, and technology skills to students from underserved communities. Fellowship placements are available across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. All fellowships are fully funded. Current placements include Bhutan, Cambodia, Ecuador, India, Morocco, Nepal, Tanzania, Thailand and more.

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS (FWB) is an educational nonprofit organization that is dedicated to empowering the next generation of digital storytellers. Through various grants, awards, international fellowships, and educational resources, FWB helps emerging filmmakers around the world leverage the creative process as a means for interpreting their role in their society.
