SMS Faculty Member Deirdre Boyle and Student Judge 2018 Peabody Awards
Deirdre Boyle, Associate Professor of Media Studies and former Director of the Graduate Certificate in Documentary Studies, is again serving as a jury chair for the 2018 Peabody Awards in documentary. She is working intently with research assistant and MA student Lauren Hamersmith to evaluate 35 films for this year’s competition. They expect to recommend 10 titles for further jury consideration.  Entrants each year are drawn from documentaries made largely for broadcast on U.S. television. This year’s crop focuses on immigration, war and genocide, refugees, urban development and land rights, PTSD, and pollution, just a few of the many critical issues explored in recent documentary work.
