Screening and Q&A with filmmaker
JOÃO MOREIRA SALLES
This “spontaneous” Doc Talk comes from a coincidental encounter of a Brazilian New School student with acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker João Moreira Salles after the recent screening of his new documentary In the Intense Now at Film Forum. An archival collage of the sixties, narrated in the first person, the film discusses history through images of the events of 1968 in France, Czechoslovakia and Brazil along with footage shot by the director’s mother during a trip to China two years earlier. The film is a compelling observation of time past, suddenly now current in today’s political moment.
João Moreira Salles is one of the great voices of contemporary Brazilian documentary. His films give punctuation to important characters and events in Brazilian history: from remarkable access to drug dealers and policemen in “News from a Personal War” (1999), to a portrait of pianist “Nelson Freire” (2003), to the historical presidential campaign of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva in “Intermissions” (2004). “Santiago” (2007), a thoughtful, delicate portrait of his family’s butler, is a popular self-reflexive film-essay about cinema.
Please join us for João Moreira Salles’ provocative political memoir, inspired by the contemplative essays of Chris Marker on the subject of youth and radicalism. Salles is a filmmaker concerned about the image and the moment: how images unveil the intensity of the moment as well as its political context; how the person behind the camera tells a story about being there.
