JD | Elab Research Assistant

ELab is a design led business lab and incubator dedicated to entrepreneurship research and practice at The New School, founded by Assistant professor Rhea Alexander with the Parsons School of Design Strategies.

The Lab runs several incubation programs for recently minted alumni entrepreneurs seeking a bridge between academia and applied practice in entrepreneurship, as well as the INNOVATE NYC program for social entrepreneurship, in partnership with the DO school along with 10 universities across NYC. ELab also provides support for the broader entrepreneurship community through workshops and events, as well as publications and their dedicated research. In 2018 they plan to kick off the third program, pilot program aimed at creative agency models or independent business.

The team contributes effectively to serving program needs within incubation, research and administrative capacities of the lab. We provide a demanding environment and a learning experience allowing students to develop as leaders, grow their skill sets and expand their professional networks.

The Research Assistant Role is supplemental to general ELab Team Admin and/or Venture Associate Role, and requires additional skill sets necessary and has additional responsibilities on top of, or instead of, the admin role.


Responsibilities:
Research assistants are responsible for the strategic planning of, the execution of, and the upkeep of all ELab research, including assisting with research papers submissions to conferences and journals, longitudinal research of past fellows, event surveys and data collection, Fellows reports and progress, as well as additional ELab research studies that may be launched in conjunction or in addition to existing research. This includes:

  • Attending ELab events
  • Assuring strategic preparation of research documents and collection methods
  • Scanning, processing and analyzing data collected
  • Actively pursuing and following up with correspondents / fellows for research responses and interviews
  • Preparing all research for the Annual Report

The Entrepreneurial Genome Project

This research is aimed at contextualizing the broader work we do at the lab. This project requires data visualization skills, programming, web and interactive graphic  design abilities. They have partnered with the Data Visualization program and the Data Arts Lab. The website is set to launch spring/summer 2018.

Desired Qualifications:
-Highly motivated, able to take initiative and function as a self-starter with minimal supervision

-Very proactive and very responsive communication in Slack, Email, and phone

-Able to and interest in communicating verbally with team and with external stakeholders
-Excellent organization/prioritization skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
-Openness to learning new skills and working on a variety of projects

Pay rate: $18/hour
Hours per week: 10 hours during the academic year and possibly more summers and winter break.
