This Week in Cinema Tropical

New York has an extensive offering of Latin American film this week, so don’t miss the remarkable range of selections screening around the city.

This Saturday, Cinema Tropical, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU, and the World Council of Peoples for the United Nations/What Moves You? are proud to present a special screening of The Unafraid as part of our ongoing program, Indocumentales.

The documentary from Anayansi Prado and Heather Courtney follows three students whose DACA status disqualifies them from attending top state universities and from receiving in-state tuition rates. Highlighting a little-known side to the immigrant experience, The Unafraid represents these students’ fights for their rights to education and belonging as powerful young people in contemporary America.

New York’s Tribeca Film Festival kicks off this Wednesday at venues around the city. The annual festival is a thrilling showcase of upcoming talent, with more than 300 shorts and features screening throughout Manhattan.

Among these is Mexican director Hari Sama‘s vivid exploration of teenage self-discovery in 1980s Mexico City, This Is Not Berlin. After a successful World Premiere at Sundance, the film is poised to compel in its New York debut: follow protagonist Carlos as he navigates the rich and enticing world of DF’s artistic and sexual underground in the year leading up to the 1986 World Cup.
