SMS Alum Joy Ernanny’s documentary “Unveil” Showing at 9th Art of Brooklyn Film Festival

SMS Alum Joy Ernanny’s documentary “Unveil” will have it’s second NY screening at the 9th Art of Brooklyn Film Festival. The Festival is devoted to Brooklyn’s film scene and only accepts entries from films that are connected to the borough in some way. Unveil was 100% shot in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood, more specifically, inside Le’Jemalik, NY’s first beauty salon for hijab-wearing women

Unveil is one of three short films that will be screened on June 6, 7pm at St. Francis College, and is among the 50 films selected for this year’s edition of AOBFF.

UNVEIL, a film by Joy Ernanny – Doc Studies ’18

(18 mins, 2018)

At a time of rising Islamophobia, Muslim women in New York have found a safe haven in a beauty salon. Le’Jemalik is the city’s first female-only parlor, where clients can remove their headscarves and indulge in halal beauty services brought to them by a resilient American Muslim businesswoman.
