What to Expect at Orientation

This post is part of the SMS Advising Series for New Students. All posts are designed and curated to make the lives of newly admitted students much easier. From academic resources to having a social life in NYC, we want to make sure that our students get the best of ALL worlds!


What to Expect at Orientation

As the start of the semester approaches and orientation week is just around the corner, we are sure new students want to know what to expect at the events. The various orientations are going to be your insight into the resources available to you at the school. The School of Media Studies Advising Team will be there to assist you and answer any questions you may have. Following are the details of all the events lined up for new students:

  • The Media Studies Orientation happening on Thursday, August 22nd, 2019 from 5:30pm – 9pm at the University Center – Room L104 will be a chance for students to get to know more about the department and mingle with faculty and peers. Please use the RSVP link to confirm your attendance. This event will be recorded for online students and those unable to attend. 
  • The Documentary Studies Orientation taking place on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from 10am – 3pm at 79 5th Avenue – Room 1618 will be a chance for new students to discuss their documentary projects and interests with faculty, alumni, and new students. Students should be prepared to discuss their current documentary project. Please RSVP here to confirm your attendance. 

There are going to be other Optional Daytime events for interested students on Thursday, August, 22nd, 2019 at various timings and locations throughout the day. These events and workshops will be hosted by the School of Media Studies. Sessions will include:

XR Center Workshop

  • Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Capacity: 15
  • Storytelling with 360 Video + Hands-on work – 90 minutes. This option will involve an introduction to 360 video and an opportunity for students to engage in a hands-on activity with the 360 cameras. Students will be separated into 3 groups and undertake a short video project.

Making Center Tour

  • Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Capacity: 25

International Field Program (IFP) Session

  • Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Capacity: 25
  • Q: Is this program available to online students? YES (with instructor permission for spring course)

SMS Tour and Current Student Q&A 

    • Time: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
    • Capacity: 25
