10/25: KINOSCOPE
KINOSCOPE is honored & delighted to present along with a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, La Semaine de la Critique that focuses on discovering new talents (revealing first and second feature films. Such directors as Chris Marker, Denys Arcand, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean Eustache, Philippe Garel, Barbet Schroeder, Ken Loach, Merzak Allouache, Romain Goupil, Leos Carax, Amos Gitai, Wong Kar-wai, Arnaud Desplechin, Benoît Poelvoorde, Guillermo del Toro, Jacques Audiard, Kevin Smith, François Ozon, Andrea Arnold or Gaspar Noé) a series of most striking shorts of next generation of cinematic masters.
Pawel Wieszczecinski (Kinoscope), Media Studies faculty member Marcus Turner as well as special guest (TBA) will discuss the film after the presentation.
The event takes place on Friday October 25that 7pm at Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Auditorium (Room N101), Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (66 5th Ave, New York, NY 10011)

PORTUGAL 2019 17′
Mena lives alone with her daughter Clara. Today is Clara’s seventh birthday. Despite her limited financial resources, Mena still manages to organize a birthday party. But after a phone call from her mother, she becomes distraught and anxious.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:Â
Sofia Bost was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1986. She studied Communication in Lisbon and earned a Filmmaking master’s degree from The London Film School. Sofia currently lives and works in Lisbon. Party Day (Dia de Fiesta), her first film, is selected at the 58th Semaine de la Critique.
2. THE LAST TRIP TO THE SEASIDE (Ultimul Drum Spre Mare)Â

Six passengers are traveling to the seaside in a train compartment. After a while, suspicion makes some of them lose their composure and the remainder of the trip goes terribly wrong.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:
Adi Voicu is graduated in Visual Arts and Film from the Film University Bucharest, in 2005. He directed the documentaries: Faces (2006), Metrobranding (2010) and Victoria (2011) which were selected in festivals like Nyon, Jihlava, Leipzig, CPH:DOX. His short film Fog (2017), his debut in fiction as a director won the Grand Jury Prize in Premiers Plan Anger 2018 and Centaur for the Best Debut in St. Petersburg Message to Man 2017. Capturing Sami, Adi’s first feature won CNC Romania production support.
3. TUESDAY FROM 8 TO 6 (Mardi de 8 a 18) by Cecilia de Arce
FRANCE 2019 26′
Nevine, a secondary school monitor, is fully committed to her somewhat thankless day job, dealing with teachers, administration and students. Logan, a pupil she is fond of, insists on getting a cap back from lost and found. She has no idea of the consequences of her gesture.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:
Cecilia de Arce is a director and screenwriter who graduated from 3iS in 2015. Her graduation film, Une sur Trois, was selected at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival the same year and wins the Award for Best Actress. Mardi de 8 a 18 (Tuesday from 8 to 6), her first produced short film, is selected at the 58th Semaine de la Critique.
4. SHE RUNS by Qiu Yang
CHINA / FRANCE 2019 20′
In an ordinary Chinese winter, a small city junior high student, YU, tries to quit her school aerobic dancing team.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:
Qiu Yang was born and raised in Changzhou, China. Graduating from Victorian College of the Arts in Austrailia. His latest short A Gentle Night was awarded Short Film Palme d’Or at 70th Festival de Cannes. Under the Sun was selected for the 68th Festival de Cannes Cinefondation Competition. He is now developing his first feature which was invited to Cinefondation Residence and was awarded CNC Screenwriting Grant.
5. DEMONIC by Pia Borg
AUSTRAILIA 2019 28′
Demonic revisits the infamous Satanic Panic of the 1980s, a mass hysteria where people around the world recovered memories of debauchery, murder, human sacrifice and satanic cults. Blending archive and reconstruction the film uncovers the forces at play between psychiatry, media, and false memory.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:Â
Pia Borg was recently named as one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film in Filmmaker magazine. In 2017 her film Silica was featured in the Maltese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. She is the recipient of numerous prizes including the Pardino d’Oro for best international short (Locarno Festival 2014) for the experimental documentary Abandoned Goods. She is currently working on her first feature, an adaptation of the short Demonic.
6. NAPTHA by Moin Hussain
UNITED KINGDOM 2019 18′
Faraz’s quiet life working at an isolated petrol station is turned upside down when his ageing father Malik begins to speak in a long-forgotten language and insists on returning back home.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:
Moin Hussain’s first short Holy Thursday was funded by Creative England and screened internationally. His seconf short Real Gods Require Blood premiered at Semaine de la Critique 2017, was nominated for Best Short Film at the BFI London Film Festival 2017 and screened at Sitges, Frightfest, and Edinburgh. His third short, Naptha, is funded by Film4 and Film London and premiered at the 2018 BFI London Film Festival. He is currently in developing his debut feature with Escape Films and Film 4.
