This Week in Cinema Tropical, 10/14-10/21

This week in New York City we’re proud to present a strong lineup of Latin American films and screenings:

Tonight, Monday, join us for the U.S premiere of Argentine director Lautaro García Candela‘s critically-acclaimed debut feature film, I Love You So Much That I Just Don’t KnowScreening as part of our ongoing series at Anthology Film Archives, the film explores the erratic porteño erratic neighborhoods of Buenos Aires—bringing the audience along on Francisco’s Friday night journey through spontaneous love affairs and tense soccer matches.

For the anthropologically-minded ethnographically-interested, the American Museum of Natural History‘s annual Margaret Mead Film Festival
kicks off this Thursday. In the spirit of groundbreaking anthropologist Margaret Mead, this year’s festival features documentary films, shorts, and other media that increases our understanding of the complexity and diversity of peoples and cultures around the world.

From Latin America, be sure to catch Marcela Arteaga‘s daring and lyrical meditation on Mexico’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, The Guardian of Memory – among many others. The film screens Friday with the filmmaker in attendance.

Finally, we’re pleased to present Andrea Cordoba’s multi-award winning documentary Sanctuary as our next installment of the Indocumentales series. Winner of the Best Film Award at the Brooklyn Film Festival, the film follows the life of one Guatemalan mother who was the first person to take public sanctuary in New York City following Trump’s election. The film screens next Monday at NYU’s King Juan Carlos I Center.
