Call for Papers: On Incarceration, Deadline 5/25

Call for Papers: On Incarceration

Deadline: Monday, May 25, 2020

Process: Journal of Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Scholarship invites submissions for issue 4.3, On Incarceration. Forms of incarceration including prisons, jails/gaols, detention centers, concentration camps, and gulags have long histories as forms of punishment, sources and sites of injustice and violence, mass employers, places of indoctrination, producers of literature and art, and institutions of oppression. More broadly, the concept of incarceration has been applied to other oppressive institutions and situations, including family situations, schools, locations, and mental or emotional states. For this issue, we welcome a wide range of approaches to the idea of incarceration, including:

  • Mass incarceration and racial injustice
  • Incarceration and law
  • Incarceration and education (prison education programs, creative writing programs, etc.)
  • Incarceration and re-education/indoctrination (American Indian Boarding Schools, Xinjiang Re-education camps, etc.)
  • Prisons as employers
  • Incarceration in history
  • Experiences of imprisonment
  • Creativity within incarceration
  • Incarceration as metaphor
  • Incarceration and health
  • Prison abolition
  • Incarceration and disability

We are especially interested in submissions from those who are or have been incarcerated, those who have worked for or within institutions of incarceration, or others with direct experience.

Questions may be directed to the editorial board at processj@uw.edu.
