On the Choreographic: Dance and Movement in Hybrid Film Practices

Back by popular demand, two dynamic workshops are returning this December—ON THE CHOREOGRAPHIC: DANCE AND MOVEMENT IN HYBRID FILM PRACTICES & PODCAST SCHOOL: AUGMENTED AUDIO REALITIES.

ON THE CHOREOGRAPHIC: DANCE AND MOVEMENT IN HYBRID FILM PRACTICES led by filmmaker and choreographer Sarah Friedland (DRILLS, Home Exercises, CROWDS), will invite participants to not only think, but move through questions such as—How can we think of gesture study as a practice that spans filmic forms? What role can interviewing and reenactment play in staging movement in nonfiction filmmaking? This four-day workshop, Dec. 4th – 8th, features an incredible line-up of guest instructors—filmmaker Sharon Lockhart (Lunch Break, Goshogaoka, Rudzienko), artist Onyeka Igwe (Specialisation Technique), choreographer Wen Hui (Dance with Third Grandma), choreographer Chris Emile (NOWNESS; MEND), artist Jaśmina Wójcik-Wróblewska (Symphony of the Ursus Factory) and choreographer Cara Hagan (Director and curator; ADF’s Movies By Movers). No prior dance experience is required and all movement will be adaptable for all abilities. On The Choreographic is best suited to filmmakers, performance artists, dancers, choreographers, and media artists looking to bring in or expand dance and movement into their practice.

For the passionate audio creator interested in the non-extractive nature of collaborative documentary, exploring ways to place a personal stamp on a story without using their voice, and relishing the gaps between words––then PODCAST SCHOOL: AUGMENTED AUDIO REALITIES workshop is for you!

Led by conceptual artist James T. Green (Senior Producer, Transmitter Media), Dec. 7th – 12th, Augmented Audio Realities will explore left of center ways of thinking about craft, and creating audio-first stories. Guest presentations, listening sessions, discussions, daily group and individual exercises, case studies and work-in-progress critiques, will offer participants a space to broaden their sonic palettes, no matter the genre. Our exceptional guest instructors include, producer Chiquita Paschal (Gimlet Media, BuzzFeed) and journalist Cher Vincent (Vox, Who We Are) on approaching your stories as an editor, producer Adriene Lilly (WFMU: The Blind Tourist) will guide participants through spatially awareness sound design, audio artist Ariana Martinez (BBC, Prism: The Tales of Your City) will speak to how one builds a world for listeners to immerse in, participants will learn how to incorporate collage as an audio artform with audio producer Olivia Bradley-Skill (WFMU), reporter Sandhya Dirks (KQED, Race and equity) will discuss thinking beyond “the inconsequential quest” narrative. Sound designer Axel Kacoutié (The Guardian, Today in Focus) will examine fighting the fear of rhythm, and multimedia editor Shanida Scotland’s (The Guardian) session will dive deep into de-centering the self in stories.

In response to our current climate, UnionDocs has continued to offer our workshops series online through video conference. We have run several online workshops with great success!

Participants shared that…

“Though we are in terrible COVID times, this felt like a wonderful way to kick off our months of solitude and introspective wonderings.”

“Though this workshop only happened online due to COVID-19 restrictions, it gave people from outside of NYC and all over the world the chance to participate. I believe this really enriched the discussions and sharing of knowledge. I hope there will be more online workshops in the future!”

“This was an absolute heroic effort–getting this class online with a moment’s notice during a pandemic….Thanks for making this such a rewarding experience!”

“I appreciate that UNDO looks for workshop leaders and guests that fall outside of the norm and blur the lines of what stereotypical documentary is.”
