Join us at our next Brown Bag Lunch on Thursday, March 4th from 1 – 2 pm via Zoom!  The topic will be The Temperament of Space: Experiments in Interaction with SMS Faculty Diane Mitchell.

Our Brown Bag Lunch Series is an opportunity for students to learn more about our faculty, their interests, and skills.

Diane Mitchell is an Associate Professor of Media Design and an interdisciplinary media artist. As director of the Temperament of Space project, she has collaborated with New School students and community members. Research that informs The Temperament of Space framework has been conducted at both public and private events, for large and small audiences, in classrooms, galleries, conferences and community spaces.

Diane will be engaging students in a discussion on the temperament of space is an immersive, multi-sensorial experience that takes on the shape of a room through projection and sound. This therapeutic project pulls us out of our bubbles and immerses us in ephemeral, natural spaces. Through seven themes, the artist’s community-based practice invigorates physical spaces to help us reconsider our relationship to our environments and cultivate tranquility in our bodies and minds. Diane will discuss lessons learned when she integrated interactivity into her fine art practice with user-friendly programming and low cost elements. Diane is looking forward to sharing ideas for future directions.
