In the context of the recent hype surrounding so-called “NFT art” — prompted by Christie’s auctioning of the designer Beeple’s Everydays jpeg for $69 Million — this talk will unpack the complexities of Non-Fungible Tokens’ meaning and potential for the art world. Among the topics covered will be definitions of NFTs and their relationship to art that uses them conceptually vs. as a sales mechanism; the history of cryptoart; as well as the potential and challenges of NFTs for gatekeeping, market decentralization, ownership, and preservation. Also discussed will be the particulars of smart contracts and artists’ responses to the environmental impact of NFT creation.
