Join us on May 7 from 12:00pm – 2:00pm EDT for the New University in Exile Consortium spring conference about the global attacks on academic freedom.

Keynote by Éric Fassin
Professor of sociology and Co-chair of the Gender Studies Department
Paris 8 University

“Academic Engagement: Critical Thought in the Age of Authoritarian Neoliberalism”

About the Conference:

In China, Turkey, Ukraine, Poland, and even France, those exercising their right to academic freedom may suffer from intimidation, censorship, arrest, and exile. No global treaty explicitly declares “academic freedom” a fundamental right and there are no legal consequences attached to infringing on the right to free expression. Following Éric Fassin’s keynote address, four New University in Exile Consortium Scholars will discuss the state of academic freedom globally.

Moderated By:

China’s Threat to Global Academic Freedom

This is the third conference organized by the New University in Exile Consortium based at The New School in New York. The Consortium is a globally expanding group of universities and colleges committed to the belief that the academic community has both the responsibility and capacity to assist persecuted and endangered scholars, to help protect the intellectual resources that are jeopardized when universities and scholars are under assault, and to advocate for academic freedom around the world.
