Monument Releasing Presents “If the Dancer Dances,” April 26
PRESENTS
A film by Lise Friedman and Maia Wechsler
Monument Releasing presents IF THE DANCER DANCES, the first documentary about the life and work of the iconic choreographer Merce Cunningham since his passing in 2009. As the world celebrates Cunningham’s centennial this spring, we’d love to share this film with your students by arranging a private screening, hosting a panel with the directors and dancers, or even dropping off postcards with some more information on the film.
IF THE DANCER DANCES film follows New York’s acclaimed Stephen Petronio Company as they restage Cunningham’s seminal RainForest, celebrating the intimate world of the studio and what it means to keep a dance—and a legacy—alive. Hailed as “a great gift” by Mikhail Baryshnikov, the film revisits one of his best collaborations with Andy Warhol, David Tudor, and Jasper Johns.
The film opens at the Quad Cinema April 26 and will feature Q&As with former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member and producer Lise Friedman, director Maia Wechsler, and Stephen Petronio, moderated by Alastair Macaulay (former chief dance critic at The New York Times) and Deborah Jowitt (choreographer and dance critic).
We look forward to working together on bringing this film to your students!
