A Look at the Work of Recent School of Media Studies Grads

The students who graduate from the School of Media Studies produce a wide variety of work, there is no one type of New School student. By taking a look at some of the work our graduates produce, we hope you can get an idea of what you can achieve in your program and become inspired as you start your graduate school journey in Fall 2020. With that said, let’s dig in. . .

Dasha Kova ‘18: Producer of Sex Cafe

After graduating in 2018, Kova co-created, produced, and directed the webseries Sex Cafe with REVRY, a platform focused on hosting content which centers queer experience. The series features candid conversations with real women on topics of female sexuality that are funny, honest, and educational. On her website Kova writes, “Sex CafĂ© was inspired by my ambition to build community through engaging, conscious, and evocative content. . . It’s not your mother’s sexual education.” You can stream the series here on youtube or REVRY.

Moreno Belic ‘17: Designer of No More Secrets

For his thesis project, Belic decided to explore the pervasive issue of tech surveillance through the design of an interactive game. Users would be asked to download the game onto their phone and perform tasks all while keeping in mind how their data is being tracked and monitored. As Belic writes on his website, “This game is designed to get you to think about the surveillance system in relation to your data body without pushing you toward one solution or another.” The project was granted The New School’s Outstanding Thesis Award. Belic currently works with the Innovation Lab at Pepsi Co.

Junting Zhou ‘18: Director of Self-Quarantine for the Holidays

When the Chinese government first began to lock down Hubei province following the spread of the novel Coronavirus, recent New School graduate Zhou began filming. What started as a small project began to tell a story. After screening the film to fellow New Schoolers and receiving promising feedback, Zhou finished the film for it to premier under the New York Times Op Docs. You can find and stream the documentary here.

Mame Damey ‘18: Writer and Designer at Mame Says…

Before moving to Brooklyn to pursue her Master’s in Media Management at the School of Media Studies, Damey became a web designer. Mame Says, the blog she developed in her time with the program, gives her a chance to bring together her passions for media, technology, and fashion. If you are looking for content which focuses on the women of the fashion world, her blog is for you. Damey writes, “I birthed Mame’ Says as a creative outlet to promote and connect women who are dominating the spaces of fashion, media, technology and overall entrepreneurship.” You can read her work here.
