Programmed by MM Serra, Part-Time Assistant Professor in Media Studies, for the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., New York Pavements: Short Films from the Collection of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative portrays the manic pace of Manhattan street life has challenged many filmmakers and artists over the years, from Joseph Cornell to Abigail Child. Featuring nine experimental or home-movie shorts, this engaging program spans six decades on New York’s streets. The films are recent restorations from the collection of the New York–based Film-Makers’ Cooperative—founded in 1961 as the first-ever artist-run collective devoted to the preservation of artists’ moving-image works.
