During the pandemic year, we’ve run the GIDEST seminars as closed Zoom workshops. We’ll continue to do that through the spring semester while planning for a return to in-person public programming in the fall.

In the meantime, please click below for video from our workshop with 2020-21 GIDEST faculty fellow American Artist. And please look out for forthcoming videos with faculty fellows and guests including visual theorist Tina Campt, educator and activist Margo Okazawa-Rey, and interdisciplinary artist Ralph Lemon.

For the full context of American Artist’s GIDEST presentation, please read their interview in unbag.

American Artist makes use of video, installation, new media, and writing to consider Black labor and visibility within networked life. In their practice they ask: how can understanding systemic racial discrimination as operating “algorithmically” be useful for challenging its various iterations? Artist was a resident at Red Bull Arts Detroit and EYEBEAM, and a recipient of the Queens Museum Jerome Foundation Fellowship. An alumni of the Whitney Independent Study program, they have exhibited at the Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco; the Studio Museum in Harlem; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; at the Whitney, the Queens Museum, Koenig & Clinton, and HOUSING in New York; and many other venues. Their work has been featured in the New York TimesArtforumBOMB, and Huffington Post, and their writing has appeared in New InquiryArt21, and elsewhere. They teach at Parsons School of Design, UCLA, and the School for Poetic Computation. For more, please visit https://americanartist.us
