Bob McKinnon – Emergent Media Activism: From Selma to Black Lives Matter

Abstract: Bob McKinnon, an Entrepreneur in Residence, School of Media Studies and President of GALEWiLL Design will provide an examination of the role of media in citizen activism. Using both historical examples and more recent media events such as #BlackLivesMatter and the Occupy movement among others, he will discuss key organizing principles and lessons learned.
During this presentation he will announce a special opportunity for SMS students and potentially other TNS as well to participate in a 1-credit project-based course on the topic of “Emergent Citizen Media Activism.”
Bio: Bob McKinnon is President of GALEWiLL Design an organization that designs social change through programming, communications, advocacy, and action. McKinnon has worked on issues ranging from childhood obesity to climate change and partnered with leading social change organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the White House, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, PBS, and the Ford Foundation among many others to help millions overcome obstacles on their way to a healthier and happier life.
Bob is also the creator of Actions Speak Loudest: Keeping Our Promise for A Better World, a book designed to help us leave our children a better world than we inherited. He has produced two documentary films, is a contributor to the Huffington Post and Fast Company and is an instructor for the School of Visual Art’s Impact!: Design for Social Change program.
Most recently, Bob launched Moving Up: The Truth About Getting Ahead in America, an online platform designed to foster a more nuanced conversation around what the American Dream is and how more can achieve it. McKinnon is alum of the School of Media Studies, having received his MA in 2005 with a specialization in Children’s Media Issues.
